November 1991. Cirque Éloize was born, the seven performers all being students at the École nationale de cirque (then located at Dalhousie Station in Montreal, the company's current head office). Autumn 1993. Incorporation of the company. Cirque Éloize is founded by Jeannot Painchaud, Daniel Cyr and Claudette Morin. Three versions of their eponymous show were created between 1991 and 1994. In this début eponymous show, themes such as tearing down borders, proximity with the audience and the artists' multidisciplinary talents were already front and centre. The show was designed to be performed on a proscenium stage, rather than in a traditional circus ring. The desire to work with other art forms was a rich source of inspiration and the years to come will only strengthen this approach.

Since its explosion onto the international scene, Cirque Éloize has performed extensively in North America, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. With their productions Cirque Orchestra and Excentricus, the company featured some of Canada's most talented circus performers and musicians, foregoing traditional animal acts to weave its tapestry of enchantment and wonder. These productions were retired in 2002 after more than 500 presentations around the world. Cirque Éloize is presently touring the world with the productions Rain, Nebbia and the brand-new production, entitled ID.

Cirque Éloize is exclusively represented in the Asia/ Pacific region by John Lambert & Assoc.

Directed by Jeannot Painchaud, founder of Cirque Éloize, and choreographed by Mourad Merzouki, Artistic Director of the Créteil/Val de Marne National Choreography Centre (CCN), this latest creation of Cirque Eloize is a dynamic and passionate mix of new circus and urban dance.

Cirque Éloize has always favored a multidisciplinary approach and, true to form, in "ID", brings to the stage ten circus disciplines, and a world which is new to the company - that of urban dance including breakdance and hip-hop.

ID is set in a public place in the heart of a futuristic city, as a spot where one can seek refuge and escape anonymity, express one's individuality, affirm one's identity and reclaim possession of public space. An area for encounters, rites of passage, where cliques confront one another, where friendships are woven, where love appears and dissolves.

There is fog that is thick and deep like intoxication. Points of reference are obscured, all that remains are streetlamps: pale islands of light.  One does’t get lost in a fog; one merely has strange encounters that are neither mirages nor hallucinations. In the fog, reality is transformed into a dream, but perhaps not truly transformed, but simply seems that way. Everything is possible.

In Nomade, we gazed up to find that the sky is larger at night; and in Rain, a nostalgic freedom poured down on us from that sky. In Nebbia, the sky descends like a mantle to cover our shoulders and protect our dreams.

Written and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, director of Rain and Nomade, Nebbia, a co-production of Cirque Eloize and Teatro Sunil (Lugano), makes up the third element of the trilogy. Nebbia premiered in Geneva in December 2007.

As a circus rehearses, the line between reality and the imaginary fades.  Moments once frozen in time now appear as live snapshots, re-introducing characters from the past and a sweet longing for days gone by. Each scene, tinged with a sweet nostalgia, shifts into a dazzling display of breathtaking acrobatics and gravity-defying feats. In the end, the entire company lets loose, splashing and diving free of care as in the games of childhood. This stylish creation blends physical prowess with spectacular visuals to inundate the audience with simple pleasure and joyful abandon. Directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca.

The poetry of circus and magic of orchestra combined...

The quest for freedom often evokes a dream of flying. The mythic dream of flight is brought to life through an individual whose feet are firmly planted on the ground, yet who is possessed with the ardent desire to soar above it all and to fly. The stages of this man’s journey take the form of a ritualized dance in which the characters he encounters defy gravity and seem like instruments of the musicians, aerial notes in a lofty musical score. For our part, we, the audience, find ourselves spirited away on a fanciful flight of rapturous music and resplendent acrobatics.

On the occasion of the 1999 Festival International de Lanaudiere near Montreal, Quebec, Cirque Éloize premiered its creation, Cirque Orchestra, in collaboration with the Orchestre Metropolitain de Montreal in a unique one-night extravaganza. Within the exceptional outdoor setting of the Amphitheatre de Lanaudiere, the poetry of circus and the power of a symphony orchesra combined to provide an unforgettable evening of visual and musical intoxication.
